Position 12 - Posted August 29, 2011
Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
Agency: University of South Dakota, Department of Biology
Location: Vermillion, SD
Job Description: We seek a postdoc for a project modeling the potential future effects of landscape change on cottonwood forests and breeding songbirds along a large portion of the Missouri River in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The postdoc will model changes in future forest area and age distribution as a function of successional processes, river management, and land use, and the potential effects of these changes on abundances of selected songbird species. This project will involve little or no collection of new field data (with the exception of some land cover mapping), but will focus primarily on integrating/synthesizing existing GIS, vegetation, and songbird data sets to project the implications of current management and land use trajectories on Missouri River floodplain forests. Expected products include development of publications, as well as models and projections useful for federal agencies managing cottonwood forests along the Missouri Rive!
r. The postdoc will be housed in the lab of Dr. Mark Dixon at the University of South Dakota (http://www.usd.edu/arts-and-sciences/biology/mark-dixon.cfm ).
Preferred Qualifications/Expertise:
* Ph.D. in ecology, wildlife biology, forestry, geography, zoology, or related fields
* Experience using program DISTANCE to model bird densities from point count data
* Familiarity with GIS and with interpreting land cover from aerial photography
* Experience with modeling landscape change and/or succession through transition models (e.g., first-order Markov or multinomial logit models), dynamic simulation programs (e.g., STELLA, VDDT), or other approaches
* Solid statistical skills (e.g., general linear models, occupancy modeling, CART, multiple regression, or other tools) using SAS, R, or other packages
* Excellent writing (documented record of publication is a plus), communication and organizational skills.
* Familiarity with or interest in concepts related to landscape and disturbance ecology, floodplain forests, large river ecology and management, avian ecology, or a combination of these.
Salary: $40,000 plus benefits
Starting Date: September 1, 2011
Duration: 1 year, with possibility of renewal for 2nd year (conditional on funding and performance)
How to Apply: Questions regarding the position may be directed toward Dr. Dixon (Mark.Dixon@usd.edu<mailto:Mark.Dixon@usd.edu>).
Applicants must provide a cover letter that describes background with respect to the qualifications listed above, along with a CV and names and contact information for at least three references. Applicants must apply online at https://yourfuture.sdbor.edu.
All offers of employment will be contingent on the favorable results of a background check.
Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

The Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB; Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.) jointly invite applications for the following position:
Full Professor (S-W3) in Freshwater Ecology/Conservation (FUB)
and
Head of a Research Department (IGB)
We are seeking an outstanding scientist to establish an innovative research programme with high international visibility, placing emphasis on freshwater ecology, biodiversity or conservation. The research should complement and interlink with current research programmes at IGB (www.igb-berlin.de) and FUB (www.fu-berlin.de), through experimental, theoretical or modelling approaches. IGB, the largest freshwater ecology institute in Germany, offers cutting-edge laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary research, including large-scale experimental infrastructure and long-term research programmes.
The position offers unique challenges and opportunities to combine ecology and conservation biology, thereby providing the basic research needed for developing innovative management strategies for freshwater ecosystems. The specific area of expertise is open, but candidates with a focus on community ecology or ecology/evolution-based conservation science (e.g. forecasting of aquatic biodiversity and related ecosystem services) are particularly encouraged to apply. She or he should have a clear vision and strategy for development of an internationally recognised research programme in freshwater community or conservation ecology.
The position requires a doctoral degree, a distinguished record of research and teaching, and experience in leading an active research programme. The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to secure external funding, and show strong commitment to the mentoring of faculty, students and fellows. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels at the Institute of Biology of FUB. The teaching language is either English and/or German, and the working language at IGB is English, allowing active communication among our internationally diverse members and colleagues.
IGB and FUB are equal opportunity employers and specifically welcome applications from female scientists. Preference will be given to applicants with disabilities when qualifications are equivalent. Applicants must fulfil the formal requirements of Berlin’s university law (§100 Berliner Hochschulgesetz). Berlin is a cultural capital of Europe, and ranks among the top destinations for science and technology worldwide.
Please submit a full curriculum vitae, including a letter of motivation, statements addressing research and teaching interests and academic leadership goals, copies of five representative publications, and the names and contact information of three references, to Univ.-Prof. Dr. H.H. Hilger, Dean, Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Freie Universität Berlin, Takustrasse 3, D-14195 Berlin, Germany (hard copy and email: dekan@bcp.fu-berlin.de). Applications will be considered until 15 April 2011. For further inquires please contact Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klement Tockner, Director of IGB (tockner@igb-berlin.de).
